Your Region needs Jamal Khan
BY TONY SALENI
There are a few constants in East Midlands boxing. The smell of liniment. The sound of the bell. And the quiet, steady presence of Jamal Khan.
Jamal is one of those rare figures in sport who never seems to be in a rush, never raises his voice, and never—ever—gets flustered. If there were a fire in the building, Jamal would calmly check the emergency exits, locate a fire extinguisher, and probably offer you a biscuit on the way out.
He is a Grade A judge and a Grade B supervisor, but a Grade A+ human being. The man has spent years officiating, supporting, calming nerves, wiping tears, adjusting corner stools, and restoring order when chaos threatens to break loose like an untied glove.
And yet, he remains strangely modest about it all. Mention his reliability and he’ll probably chuckle and say something about “just doing my bit.” Which is like Michelangelo calling the Sistine Chapel ceiling “a bit of painting.”
When Jamal show up. He shows up early, stays late, and somehow finds time to help everyone in between. Need a last-minute supervisor? Jamal. Someone to explain the rules without sounding like a traffic warden? Jamal. Someone who’s never once tried to steal the limelight but still ends up in every thank-you speech? That would be Jamal again.
He is also a rare thing in boxing: a man universally liked. Not tolerated. Not respected-from-a-distance. Liked. Coaches and officials trust him. Boxers smile when they see him. Secretaries breathe a little easier knowing he’s in the building. He is, to use the technical term, the glue.
Now, he’s running for President & Appointment Secretary. And frankly, who better? He’s already the person people go to when something needs sorting. All this does is make it official. He’ll bring fairness, transparency, and a level of common sense so rare it should probably be licensed. And he’ll make sure our regional officials—especially the probationary ones—get the opportunities they need.
Let’s not be coy. Jamal Khan is the sort of man who holds the whole operation together. A gentleman of the sport. A friend to many. And a much-needed presence in any room, ring, or council table he walks into.
If we want a region that works better, feels fairer, and runs smoother, then it starts with giving responsibility to those who already carry it with grace. Jamal Khan is that man. Let’s make it official.
