The Still Point: Wikipix and the Art of Seeing

By: Tony Saleni

We talk often about giving young talent a chance. Wikipix shows why it matters.

She is only seventeen*, but carries herself with the grace and kindness of someone far older. I have shirts in the back of my wardrobe  one or two that no longer fit older than Vicki, and yet she walks into a room and works it with quiet confidence.

I first saw Vicki working at the Riddings ABC home show. The ring was a riot of noise and motion the shouts, the thud of gloves, the ropes vibrating with every step and there she was, moving through it all like a bee on a patch of flowers. She darted from post to post, slipped into the neutral corner, crouched low, one eye poised on the viewfinder. For a moment everything seemed to pause the crowd, the fighters, the ring itself until the shutter clicked. This is what she does. She waits for that split second of balance in the chaos, the frame that will hold the whole fight inside it.

I know she is booked for our own home show, and word is spreading the bookings are coming in thick and fast. Her rates are fair, almost too fair for the care she brings to every picture.

If you are organising a show, give her the space to work. Let her find that still point for you because once the lights go down and the gloves are hung, her pictures are all that remain. Call her today, show support for the young people in our region.
